Turkey-US relations deadlocked over Sweden’s NATO membership – T24

Turkey’s delay in the process of Sweden’s accession to NATO has brought Ankara and Washington to an impasse. This was reported by the T24 newspaper.

“Turkey’s dragging out the issue of Sweden’s NATO membership has practically brought relations to a deadlock. After the NATO summit last July, the US side complained that Turkey had failed to fulfil its promises,” T24 wrote.

According to the newspaper, the terrorist attack that took place at the opening of Turkey’s parliament, as well as the conflict in the Middle East, allowed Ankara to “tie its hands” in dealing with the issue.

“In fact, the government intends to give the green light to Sweden’s NATO membership. However, it is also trying to turn negative developments in its favour,” the publication explains.

We will remind, earlier Turkey said that it will not let through the straits of the Black Sea minesweepers, which Ukraine received from the UK. It specified that according to the 1936 Montreux Convention, warships are prohibited from passing through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits during military conflicts.
