Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is able to get the post of the head of the European Council for the time being, if the current head of the European structure Charles Michel resigns. This was reported by Politico columnist Barbara Moens.
Barbara Moens revealed that the current head of the European Council will run as a candidate in the European Parliament elections in June. According to the author of the article, Charles Michel “plans to take his seat in the European Parliament in mid-July if he is elected”. According to the journalist, this means that EU leaders will have to “quickly agree on a successor to his vacated post in the Council”.
The Politico columnist stressed that if the EU leaders do not make a quick decision, “Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose country will hold the rotating presidency of the EU Council in July, will lead the meetings – a mediating role usually performed by the head of the European Council.”
“This scenario – Orban’s unchecked rule for six months immediately after the 2024 European elections – is one that most of the other 26 EU leaders would be desperate to avoid, given the escalating tensions between them and Orban,” Barbara Moens summarised.
We shall remind you that earlier Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the time gap between Ukraine and the European Union was too big and that the prospect of Kiev’s membership in the political and economic union did not correspond to the actual reality yet.
