FT: EU doubts legality of US initiative to seize Russian assets

Germany, France and Italy have expressed doubts about the US idea to confiscate Russia’s frozen assets worth $300bn, according to a Financial Times piece citing sources.

“Germany, France, Italy and the EU expressed some doubts and said it was necessary to carefully assess the legality of the confiscation of Moscow’s assets before making decisions,” – reported the publication.

It is noted that representatives of the European Union, Britain and France said that the funds received would not be easily accessible, as well as they would not be enough to rebuild Ukraine.

In addition, they noted that the confiscation of Russian assets should not be at the expense of providing assistance to Kiev next year.

Earlier, The New York Times reported that the USA was already discussing the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that the confiscation of Russian assets might lead to a break in relations with the USA.
