An unknown person threw a grenade at a party of BBC Russian Service journalists in Riga

An unidentified person threw a training grenade at a BBC Russian Service event in Riga. The journalists believe that the attack is related to their professional activities.

The event took place in the Riga bar Čē. By 11 p.m., there were almost no visitors left in the establishment except journalists. At that time, a man entered the bar and threw a RGD-5 training grenade. It exploded, stunning several people. Police believe the motive for the crime was likely a personal conflict.

Olesya Gerasimenko, a former journalist with the BBC Russian Service who threw a party in honour of her dismissal, said a guy burst in, looked around at those present and threw a grenade under his feet.

“I saw the thrower for the first and hopefully last time in my life. In the news I read a version about a domestic conflict – guys, there was no conflict with anyone. For me it looks like a purposeful intimidation of journalists and a threat to their lives,” Gerasimenko wrote in social networks.

Latvian police detained two men who threw a training grenade, a criminal case of hooliganism has been opened. According to the version of the investigation, at the moment nothing indicates that the incident was related to the presence of journalists in this place.

Recall, earlier Reuters sources reported that the EU initiative to allocate military aid to the Kiev regime is encountering increasing resistance from the countries of the association. Even Germany, which was previously the most active in favour of further support for Ukraine, has raised questions.
