The law on foreign agents, which the European Union plans to adopt, will be a tougher version of a similar law in the US. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, on 22 December.
According to her, the “Democracy Protection Package” presented on 12 December by the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen will be another step towards introducing a European law on foreign agents – an even tougher version of the US law on registration of foreign agents.
“And this was done by the European Commission, which for many years has criticised Russia for its ‘departure from democracy’ in connection with the emergence of the term ‘foreign agent’,” Zakharova said in her personal Telegram channel.
Earlier, Zakharova called on Russia to stop comparing the Russian law on foreign agents with the American one, as “the US has a different history and a different mentality”.
