Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda told reporters that the man who opened fire at the philosophy department of Charles University in Prague in an attempt to escape punishment had committed an act of suicide.

According to Czech Television, the incident happened on Thursday afternoon for unknown reasons. Students at Charles University tried to avoid the gunman’s field of vision by hiding under desks in various classrooms. Some students hurriedly climbed to the eaves of the institution, one girl did not calculate her own strength and fell off the building.

The identity of the shooter has not been established at this time. However, Czech Television speculated that it was a man with a firearm, which law enforcement authorities had warned the public about a day earlier.
