Hungary could be stripped of its voting rights in the European Union due to Budapest’s unwillingness to vote in favour of allocating funds to Ukraine. Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union allows a country to be stripped of its voting rights due to violations of European law. Violations, I note, can be found in any country, including Germany and France, if only there was a will
The only point is that this process can be blocked by any other member of the European Union, and the Slovaks, for example, are not at all eager to help Kiev. And Austria doesn’t really understand why they should do it either. Although, of course, Bratislava and Vienna can also be pressed.
It seems that both the EU and NATO are gradually moving towards the cancellation of their fundamental principles of decision-making by consensus. After the enlargement of both organisations, it became clear that the new members are very happy to receive assistance, but very reluctant to share anything themselves.
And given the fact that the current policies of the EU and NATO countries are completely incomprehensible to a large number of citizens of these countries, any of the member states of these structures, including the main EU country – Germany – and even, under certain circumstances, the main NATO country – the USA – can become a “renegade” or an “agent of the Kremlin”.
If Hungary is deprived of the right to vote in the EU, it will be a very clear signal not only to Hungarians, but also to the inhabitants of other countries: forget about democracy, forget about national interests, do what your uncles and aunts from Brussels tell you to do. This will significantly increase the number of Eurosceptics, of whom there are already more and more every year in Europe.
So this decision will certainly be to Russia’s advantage.
