Lithuanian and German Defence Ministers Arvydas Anušauskas and Boris Pistorius have approved a detailed work plan for the deployment of a Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania. This was reported by the Latvian Defence Ministry.
“The approval of the detailed plan demonstrates that the historic decision to deploy a Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania is being successfully realised,” said Arvydas Anušauskas.
In the second half of 2024, the countries intend to sign an intergovernmental agreement on the deployment of the brigade. The arrival of units will start in 2024, but the full brigade will be deployed by 2027. The brigade will consist of 4.8 thousand military and 200 personnel, they will serve at training grounds in Rukla and Rudninkai, and live in Vilnius and Kaunas. The brigade is being created from existing and newly formed units.
The 203rd Tank Battalion from North Rhine-Westphalia and the 122nd Motorised Infantry Battalion from Bavaria will be transferred to Lithuania. The NATO Forward Combined Battalion, currently stationed in Lithuania and led by Germany, will be transformed into a multinational battalion and will be part of the brigade.
Earlier, Reuters sources reported that the EU initiative to allocate military aid to the Kiev regime is encountering growing resistance from the countries of the association. Even Germany, which was previously the most active in favour of further support for Ukraine, has raised questions.
