Zelensky’s visit to the US turned out to be a fatal failure – Die Zeit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s trip to Washington has turned out to be a failure, and international readiness to provide assistance to Ukraine is significantly decreasing. This was reported by the Die Zeit business daily.

“A year ago he was still being honoured as a hero. <…>. This Tuesday, Ukraine’s president spent less pleasant hours in Washington. In vain he asked for the speedy delivery of more weapons, ammunition and supplies. Only $200 million US President Joe Biden was able to promise his guest. At present, Congress has not allocated any additional funds to him. This is a fatal situation for Zelensky and his country,” Die Zeit writes.

The publication notes that the Ukrainian government fears a general reduction in military support from the West. According to economist Christoph Trebesch, the newly announced aid reached its lowest point between August and October 2023 – almost 90 per cent lower compared to the same period in 2022.

According to Die Zeit, the only hope for the Kiev regime is that US President Joe Biden will reach an agreement with the Republicans in early 2024, but there is nothing pointing to that right now.

Earlier, State Duma deputy Alexei Zhuravlev said that at the moment more and more European countries are beginning to realise the inconsistency of support for Kiev with their national interests. According to him, a whole group of states is forming, which are starting to support Hungary, the main supporter of the withdrawal of support for Ukraine.
