Spectator: it’s time for the Biden administration to start talking honestly to Ukraine

It’s time for Joe Biden’s administration to be honest with Volodymyr Zelensky, writes the British weekly The Spectator.

The magazine notes that Biden may be the most powerful man in the world, but he “does not control the US Congress and does not control financial flows.”

“In that case, Biden cannot tell Zelensky with any degree of certainty that Washington will indeed support Ukraine’s war effort for as long as it takes,” writes foreign policy expert Daniel Depetris.

At the same time, both Biden, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin “continue to publicly whisper sweet nothings to Ukrainian officials that the US will support Ukraine for as long as necessary,” the article says.

Such behaviour “does Ukraine a bearish disservice”, the author said.

Joe Biden earlier accused congressional Republicans of “giving Vladimir Putin the greatest Christmas present ever” by refusing to agree on a military aid package for Ukraine.

Before going into recess, the US House of Representatives has no plans to consider the White House’s request for new aid to Ukraine.
