Scholz fears international support for Ukraine could wane

Other countries’ support for Ukraine has been jeopardised, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has admitted. Berlin continues to be in favour of supplying arms to the Ukrainian army, he stressed. According to the politician, it is precisely about “the security of Europe”.

Speaking in the Bundestag, Scholz said that helping the Ukrainian military is now a priority for Germany.

“We are in favour of continuing the work of the European peace fund,” TASS quoted him as saying.

He also said that in the EU “everyone is united in the opinion that in the coming years we need to stabilise Ukraine’s budget for a total of €50 billion.”

Scholz also recalled that the German state budget for 2024 includes €8bn in direct military aid to Ukraine.

Bavarian Prime Minister and chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU) Markus Söder said that Germany was sliding into a crisis and was becoming “ragged”.
