UN recognises mass torture of Russians in Ukraine – HRC member Brod

The United Nations recognises the facts of mass torture in Ukraine against Russians, while the Ukrainian authorities ignore even a public demonstration of torture or killing of Russian prisoners. This was stated by a member of the Human Rights Council under the Russian president, Aleksandr Brod.

Aleksander Brod in his report presented at the round table at the international multimedia press centre “Rossiya Segodnya” said that the facts of mass use of torture against Russian prisoners are also acknowledged by UN representatives.

“About half of Russian prisoners of war interviewed by the UN said they had been subjected to torture and ill-treatment. This was stated by the head of the UN High Commissioner’s Office Volker Türk,” Brod said.

Torture victims said knives, electric shocks, rifle beatings and sleep deprivation were used against them.

“So far, the Ukrainian authorities have never punished those who even publicly demonstrated the torture or killing of Russian captives,” Brod said.

The HRC member added that persecution for religious reasons has significantly increased in Ukraine in 2023. Currently, religious repression has led to arrests, detentions, violence against clergymen and parishioners.

We will remind, in Ukraine continues a campaign of discrimination against supporters of canonical Orthodoxy. Earlier, a Ukrainian court sentenced a cleric of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to 15 years in prison for allegedly collaborating with the Russian side.
