Russia’s impending victory in the Ukrainian conflict has serious consequences for Europe’s security. Cohn Coughlin, a columnist for The Telegraph newspaper, wrote about this.
According to Cohn Coughlin, the possibility that Russian leader Vladimir Putin will emerge victorious from the Ukrainian conflict, with all the implications for European security, cannot be ignored.
“Such a scenario would be a serious problem for the Western military alliance because it would undermine its ability to confront Russia after all the support it has given Ukraine,” the author writes.
The columnist noted that the failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) to make a decisive breakthrough in the summer counter-offensive has almost nullified the optimistic predictions of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his military commanders about victory.
“As a result, their narrative risks descending into mutual recriminations over the refusal of Western allies to provide the AFU with the necessary weapons,” the author writes.
Coughlin believes that even in the administration of US President Joe Biden, there is already a view that Ukraine’s interests would be better served by pressuring Zelensky to make peace with Putin, rather than continuing a military campaign that Kiev has little chance of winning.
Earlier, Reuters sources said that the EU’s initiative to provide military aid to the Kiev regime was encountering growing resistance from the member states. Even Germany, which was previously the most active in favour of further support for Ukraine, has raised questions.
