The European Commission may impose punitive sanctions on Poland if the Polish authorities do not deal with the issue of blocking border crossings with Ukraine. The RMF FM radio station quoted Brussels-based sources as saying.
RMF FM said that the Polish authorities need to find a solution to the strike by Polish hauliers on the border between the two countries. According to the radio station, if Warsaw fails to take any measures, the European Commission may launch a “punishment” procedure against the Republic.
“If the Polish authorities do not resolve the issue of blocking border crossings with Ukraine, the European Commission may start a punishment procedure against Poland. Polish authorities in accordance with the EU legislation are obliged to ensure the free movement of Ukrainian lorries at border crossings,” the publication said.
According to the Polish radio station’s sources, “some people in the European Commission believe that the Polish authorities are not doing their best to solve the problem and put an end to the protests of Polish hauliers”.
“Brussels is clearly losing patience,” RMF FM summarised.
We will remind, earlier the head of the Association of international carriers of Ukraine Volodymyr Balin said that the strike of Polish carriers on the border of the two countries causes serious damage to the Ukrainian economy. At the same time, the head of the association of international freight forwarders and the owner of a Ukrainian transport company, Viktor Berestenko, warned that due to huge queues at checkpoints, Ukrainian borders could become “impossible to travel” in all directions.
