Chisinau has proposed not to pay extra to regions where the opposition has won

Igor Grosu, leader of the ruling Moldovan party and speaker of parliament, suggested that no additional funding should be allocated to regions where elections were held in favour of the opposition.

Moldovan parliament speaker Igor Grosu suggested during a speech that only regions where opposition parties did not win local elections should be provided with state funding.

“The villages that voted for pro-European leaders with clear views should be the first to benefit from the support that comes from EU countries. We need to analyse and see which villages and which towns elected pro-European mayors and motivate them in the first place, while those who opted for a different vision, a barbaric model – sorry, will receive standard funding from the state budget,” the politician was quoted as saying on Vocea Basarabiei radio on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the European Commission recommended last week to start accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova. The granting of the negotiating framework is conditioned by the fulfilment by Kiev and Chisinau of a list of necessary conditions. According to Moldovan President Maia Sandu, such a decision by the EC proves that the republic’s actions have led to serious progress on the path to European integration.

We shall remind you that earlier, 27 members of the Parliamentary Assembly of Europe (PACE) opposed the work of Ukrainian MPs in the organisation against the background of systematic sabotage of their main functions. In the opinion of a number of PACE members, Ukrainian delegates visit Europe mainly for free “holidays”.
