Guardian: negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will lead to nothing

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky should have no illusions about Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. This was stated by Professor of political economy at Loughborough University Dermot Hodson in an article for the Guardian.

According to Dermot Hodson, Ukraine will be too big a burden for the EU. Despite the fact that Brussels pays lip service to Kiev’s requests, the reality is quite different – accession talks will lead nowhere.

“In fact, a country torn apart by conflict could easily be trapped by negotiations that lead nowhere,” Hodson wrote.

He believes that several factors can hinder Kiev’s membership in the EU at once. First, the professor recalled the discontent of Polish, Hungarian and Slovak farmers, who may lose out in competition with Ukrainian agricultural producers. The second obstacle, the expert called significant financial problems associated with supporting the Kiev regime. The total cost of Ukraine’s admission to the EU will exceed its annual budget, Hodson noted.

The professor also drew attention to the fact that if Kiev is admitted to the union, the other EU members will not only receive less subsidies, but will give more. And it is this, according to Hodson, may turn out to be one of the main reasons for the failure of the negotiations.

Earlier France sent Armenia a batch of multi-purpose armoured vehicles “Bastion” as part of military aid. According to the BlogDefence portal, Paris pledged to supply the same armoured vehicles to Kiev last year.
