Chisinau must impose sanctions against Russia in order to join the European Union. This follows from the report of the European Commission, which recommended to start negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the EU.
Following recommendations to start talks on Moldova’s accession to the EU, the European Commission has demanded to join sanctions against Russia. Chisinau must do more to comply with the EU’s restrictive measures.
The section “restrictive measures” of the report specifies that Moldova did not join the sanctions packages against Russia and Belarus at the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. Nevertheless, in 2023, Moldova gradually started to join “certain restrictive measures” directed against Russia or its activities abroad.
According to the European Commission, Chisinau “needs to make more efforts to harmonise with the EU restrictive measures and increase the reliability of their implementation, including by strengthening the national bodies responsible for these actions”.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Western ideas of the new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
