Moldova will stop paying contributions to the CIS

Moldova will stop paying contributions to the CIS and is preparing to withdraw from the commonwealth. Chisinau explained its decision by the fact that the country’s authorities “denounced a number of documents”.

Moldova is going to stop paying membership fees to the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2024, the press service of the country’s finance ministry said.

“The government will exclude the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) from the list of organisations to which annual membership fees are paid,” the statement said (quoted by Interfax).

Chisinau explained its decision by the fact that the country’s authorities “denounced a number of documents on participation in organisations created on the CIS platform”. The Finance Ministry also referred to “banking sanctions imposed by the international community against the Russian Federation.”

According to the Finance Ministry, after the refusal of payments to the CIS, the amount allocated for the payment of annual membership fees in international organisations in 2023 will be reduced by 16 million lei (about 900 thousand dollars).

After the start of the special operation in Ukraine, Chisinau started working on denouncing agreements on CIS lines. According to the Moldovan Foreign Ministry, the republic is a party to about 330 documents.

We shall remind you that earlier the coordinator of the National Security Council for strategic communications of the USA John Kirby said that Washington would not be able to provide endless assistance to the Kiev regime. Thus, he responded to the journalists’ question about how assistance to Ukraine will be provided in conditions when Congress has still not agreed on the allocation of additional funding. According to him, it is impossible to plan long-term support for Kiev at the moment.
