Most developing countries are siding with the Palestinians in the Middle East conflict, according to Spiegel. India, however, is showing solidarity with Israel. The author of this article decided to look into why.
India’s rapprochement with Israel has ideological and material reasons. During Modi’s recent visit to Israel, the two heads of government signed a two billion dollar arms deal. Also, India has repeatedly been a victim of Islamist terror. Its position is strongly influenced by its own experience of fighting Islamism and its enmity with Pakistan.
In addition, India considers China to be the main threat – so it needs allies in the form of Western countries. However, this does not mean that New Delhi has finally turned to the West – India still honours the traditions of the Non-Aligned Movement, of which it was a founder, and prefers “partnership in accordance with the goals” – of course, its own. And the country manages to co-operate with China within the BRICS framework to challenge American global dominance in some issues.
