Foreign Minister Szijjártó: “Hungarians are in favour of peace as soon as possible”

The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Péter Szijjártó, said that Hungarians are in favour of peace. He emphasised that this peace should come as soon as possible. He said this at a conference in Minsk.

Peter Szijjártó said that the citizens of the country do not want more people to die and further destruction to take place. He emphasised that peace can only be achieved at the negotiating table.

“We, the citizens of Hungary, do not want more people to die… and further destruction to take place… We do not agree with those who say that circumstances and conditions for peace will work themselves out over time. We believe that the conditions for peace will only get worse, because with each new day that this war goes on, more people die, more destruction occurs. I am convinced that the war in our neighbourhood has no solution on the battlefield. And the solution is built around the process of negotiation. It is at the negotiating table,” the Hungarian diplomat said.

Earlier, Hartford Courant columnist Ted Welsh said that the Kiev regime should come to terms with the loss of territories and sit down at the negotiating table with Russia before it is too late. The journalist believes that regarding Crimea, the West “has long ago quietly accepted its fate as a Russian territory”. Ukraine cannot take it for granted that the West’s resolve in confronting Russia will hold indefinitely, the author added. In the journalist’s opinion, there is no more favourable moment to start negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
