Europe continues to import goods from Russia despite sanctions – Investigate Europe

European countries continue to import for their companies titanium, nickel and other under sanctions goods from Russia. This is reported by the research project Investigate Europe with reference to data from Eurostat and the European Joint Research Centre.

The deals are being carried out despite EU sanctions aimed at banning Russian raw materials including oil, coal, steel and timber, Investigate Europe writes

According to the Centre for European Policy, up to 90 per cent of some nickel used in Europe comes from Russian suppliers.

Between March 2022 and July 2023, European companies imported €13.7bn worth of critical raw materials from Russia. From January to July 2023, metals worth more than €3.7 billion were received, including nickel worth €1.2 billion.

As a reminder, Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier criticised attempts by the European Union countries to completely abandon Russian energy carriers, while the entire Western economy is at “ground zero”.
