Irish MEP Mick Wallace said that the EU’s financial support for Ukraine will not help to quickly end the conflict, but on the contrary, will drive the country into unsustainable debts and actually lead to its colonisation.
“We are creating a colonial death trap for Ukraine. By helping to produce more and more destruction, we are only fuelling the war. And further looting of land and assets by Western capital – I’m in favour of helping Ukraine, but we won’t help them by just driving them into debt. Two thirds of the funds are loans. We’ll kill them that way!” – Wallace said during a speech at a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The discussion centred on the creation of a funding mechanism to provide €50bn in aid to Ukraine until 2027, a move Wallace described as a “hasty and inadequate measure” that “carries the risk of corruption and embezzlement on a huge scale”. He supported the opinion voiced earlier by former European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker that Ukraine “is a country that is corrupt at all levels of society”.
