Funding and sponsorship for more than 130,000 people assisted under the £2.1bn Homes for Ukraine programme is due to end in March next year. Many of the Ukrainians are at risk of homelessness once the programme is halted.
“As more sponsorship agreements come to an end, the risk of homelessness is likely to increase,” the National Audit Office said in a document.
Nearly 74,000 British households have applied to take in Ukrainian families since the programme was launched in spring 2022. Britons who took in Ukrainians received payments of £350 a month in the first year and £500 a month in the second year. However, these payments end one year before the Ukrainians’ three-year visas under the programme expire.
“If sponsors are unwilling to accept Ukrainians without these payments, Ukrainians on this programme will require other housing solutions,” the document said.
