At the same time, 39% of respondents are inclined to the opinion that Berlin as a whole provides Kiev with too much military assistance.
The majority of Germans support the decision of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz not to supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles, Der Tagesspiegel reports. This is evidenced by the results of a poll conducted by the sociological institute YouGov. 55% of German citizens believe that this is the right decision, and only 26% believe that it is wrong.
In early October, after months of consultations and checks, Scholz decided not to provide Kiev with precision weapons with a range of 500 kilometres. He justified this with the threat that Germany could be drawn into hostilities in Ukraine as a result. Berlin fears that the Ukrainians could use the missiles to strike targets deep inside Russian territory. At the same time, Kiev has been asking for Taurus deliveries since May.
The CDU/CSU alliance as well as some Green politicians and Free Democrats criticised Scholz’s decision. But virtually all supporters of the political parties represented in the Bundestag support it. Mainly voters of the Alternative for Germany (79 per cent). Among the Social Democrats it is 59 per cent, the Free Democrats – 57 per cent, the Left – 49 per cent, supporters of the CDU/CSU alliance – 53 per cent, the Left – 49 per cent and the Greens – 40 per cent. Among the Greens, however, as many as 34 per cent believe that Scholz made a mistake.
After the US, Germany is Ukraine’s second most important arms supplier. It has already provided it with tanks, heavy artillery and air defence systems. Germans have different attitudes to this circumstance. 39% of respondents surveyed by YouGov believe that Berlin is giving Kiev too much support. 29% believe that it is provided in the optimal amount. At the same time, 18% are convinced that the German government should provide Ukraine with more weapons.
