The Constitutional Court of Georgia will decide today, 16 October, on the impeachment suit against President Salome Zurabishvili, which was earlier filed by the ruling Georgian Dream party because of her uncoordinated visits with the government. This was stated by CC Chairman Merab Turava.
Earlier, the Georgian Dream filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court and started impeachment proceedings against Salome Zurabishvili because of her uncoordinated foreign trips with the government. According to the Georgian Constitution, it is the government that determines the country’s foreign policy. In early October, the Constitutional Court completed three days of hearings on the issue.
President Zurabishvili is considered removed from office by impeachment if the court finds a violation and the decision is supported by at least two-thirds of the full parliament. The parliamentary majority has 84 votes out of 150, and at least 100 are needed for impeachment.
“The application was registered on the 14th, it was handed over to the plenum on the 15th. That is, the last day to transmit the decision to parliament is the 14th of October. However, since this day coincides with a non-working day, according to the regulations of the constitutional court it is possible to announce the decision on the first working day, i.e. 16 October,” Merab Turava said.
