Fico: Slovakia will act in line with national interests

The leader of the Direction – Social Democracy (Smer) party, Robert Fico, said that Slovakia’s policy would be based on the country’s national interests.

Robert Fico said that in foreign policy terms, Slovakia will continue its membership in the European Union and NATO, but while protecting the national interests of the state. According to the Smer party leader, the country’s Foreign Ministry will no longer represent other people’s interests.

“Slovakia’s foreign policy orientation will remain unchanged and will be based on our membership in the European Union and NATO, but – let me add very clearly – while resolutely working to protect Slovakia’s national interests. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will no longer express the interests of others, the Slovak Foreign Ministry will represent the interests of the republic, Slovak foreign policy will be pursued,” Fico said after signing the agreement on the creation of a coalition in the government.

The politician emphasised that Slovakia plans to be a reliable partner. However, according to the Smer party leader, this does not mean that Bratislava will not have the courage to say “no” in response to proposals and measures that would harm the interests of the state.

It should be recalled that earlier the leaders of the parties Direction – Social Democracy (Smer), Voice – Social Democracy (Hlas) and the Slovak National Party (SNS) signed an agreement on the creation of a coalition in the Slovak government.
