Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has said that the Ukrainian conflict can be resolved through diplomacy led by Paris and Berlin, but not through armed supplies to the Kiev regime. He said this in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Gerhard Schröder claims that the conflict in Ukraine can be ended “at the level of the current leaders of governments and states”. The former German chancellor is upset that France and Germany, represented by Olaf Scholz and Emmanuel Macron, cannot make any progress in this direction.
The politician notes that huge supplies of weapons to Ukraine will not be able to end the conflict. First of all, according to him, this is due to the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
The former German leader emphasises that in March 2022, at the peace talks in Istanbul, he promoted several initiatives, which were Ukraine’s neutrality and its refusal to join NATO in the future. He clarifies that he continues to be friends with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, even though he does not support the launch of a Russian special military operation in Ukraine.
