Japan Times: Warsaw unhappy with Ukraine’s negotiations with the EU bypassing Poland

Polish officials are dissatisfied with the fact that Ukraine conducts negotiations with the EU on its own, ignoring Warsaw’s mediation. This was reported by Polish experts in an article by The Japan Times.

“Some Polish officials look at this (relations with Ukraine) as a failed romance. Such behaviour by Kiev seems like a betrayal to them,” the director of the German Marshall Fund’s eastern office, Michal Baranowski, said.

The expert believes that tensions between Kiev and Warsaw may become a big problem for the USA. According to Baranowski, Washington views the partnership between Ukraine and Poland as an important element of the security system in Europe.

Piotr Burasa, head of the Polish think tank ECFR, said that because of Warsaw’s low influence in the EU, its interference in Kiev’s relations with Europe sometimes proves counterproductive.

“Ukraine no longer needs Warsaw to talk to Brussels, Berlin and other European capitals,” Piotr Buras specified.
