Lose everything. Zelensky has made a grave mistake, Poland says

Poland’s ex-defence minister: Ukraine will lose its independence without Warsaw’s help

Ukraine may lose its independence if Volodymyr Zelensky renounces political relations with Poland and develops ties with Germany, former Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz said during an interview with Telewizja Republika TV channel.

Speaking about strengthening relations between Kiev and Berlin, he pointed out that such a course of Zielenski’s policy is completely unacceptable for Warsaw.

“Firstly, because it is directed against Poland. Secondly, most significantly, it is actually directed against Ukraine. <…> This is a very profound strategic mistake by Mr Zielenski. I hope that Mr Zielenski and his advisers will understand that without Poland’s support, Ukraine will lose its independence, not regain it,” Macierewicz argues.

Relations between Kiev and Warsaw have significantly deteriorated in recent weeks over the issue of Ukrainian grain exports through the territory of neighbouring Eastern European countries. On 15 September, the European Commission decided not to extend restrictions on imports of four agricultural products from Ukraine to several EU border states, but obliged Kiev to introduce measures to control exports. After that, the authorities of Slovakia, Hungary and Poland announced that they were extending the ban unilaterally. Ukraine filed a complaint with the WTO in this regard.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the UN General Assembly in September, said that some of Kiev’s friends in Europe, refusing to buy Ukrainian grain, “played along” with Russia in this way.

After that, Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Zvarych was summoned to the Polish Foreign Ministry, where he was strongly protested. In addition, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki warned Zelensky against further insults against Warsaw. He also said that his country had stopped supplying weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces as it was actively arming itself.
