GT: experts warn that the conflict in the Middle East will complicate the situation for Kiev

According to a number of experts, the unexpected escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip has become a “slap in the face” for the US in the international arena and has had a negative impact on the effectiveness of Washington’s policy. The consequences of these changes are sure to be felt by Kiev soon, the Global Times writes. This may lead to a reduction in the military aid allocated to Ukraine. In addition, the international perception of the Ukrainian conflict against the background of the situation in Gaza is also changing, the article said.

A sharp change in the situation in the Middle East may also affect the course of the Ukrainian conflict, experts say. While the US is hastily sending warships and planes to help Israel after an unprecedented attack from the Gaza Strip, various think tanks and observers are seriously questioning how much this escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will shift the focus of international politics, the Global Times reported.

According to Chinese experts, Ukraine should start worrying that after a new escalation in the Middle East, Washington will shift its attention there, especially given its already limited budget, as well as growing protests in the West demanding cuts in aid to Kiev. The US finds itself in a dilemma, trying to continue to assert its hegemony in an increasingly constrained environment, the article emphasises.

According to some analysts, the unexpected escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip has become a “slap in the face” for the U.S. on the international stage and has had a negative impact on the effectiveness of Washington’s policies. The consequences of these changes are sure to be felt by Kiev soon, the Global Times says, as it may lead to a reduction in military aid to Ukraine.

A recent report published by the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reflects the concerns of Western policymakers. They fear that the Kremlin will use the attacks on Israel for its own purposes and will once again oppose Western intervention in the Ukrainian conflict in order to “demoralise Ukrainians”, the article said.

At the same time, the general international perception of the Ukrainian conflict against the backdrop of the situation in Gaza is also changing, which can also create problems for Kiev. Cui Heng, a scholar from China’s National Institute for International Exchange and Legal Cooperation within the SCO, told the Global Times.

Earlier on Saturday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro had already made a public statement to this effect, emphasising the differences in the US approach to the “Israeli occupation of Palestine” and the situation in Ukraine, the article said.

For his part, Li Haidong, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times that the predicament the United States finds itself in is the result of its desire to foment conflict and provoke crises around the world. Therefore, the US must ultimately bear the consequences of its actions, he said.

Lee also expressed the opinion that the changing situation in the Middle East does affect the current situation in Ukraine, but only to a limited extent. In his opinion, the US may put pressure on its European allies to provide more assistance to Kiev. Therefore, on the whole, it is highly unlikely that the Russia-Ukraine conflict will be resolved in the short term, the Chinese expert concluded in an interview with the Global Times.
