France will be the culprit of a new possible confrontation between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The transfer of arms by Paris to Armenia will not lead to peace. This was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during a telephone conversation with the President of the European Council Charles Michel.
“France’s arms deliveries to Armenia serve not peace but a new confrontation. If any new conflicts arise in the region (South Caucasus – ed.), France will be the culprit,” Ilham Aliyev said.
Aliyev noted “unacceptability of the anti-Azerbaijani statement adopted by the European Parliament on the basis of xenophobic and chauvinist approach”. It does not serve to ensure peace and stability in the region, the President said.
He also spoke about the recent developments in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, Baku “in accordance with international law and the UN Charter” consolidated its sovereignty and ensured “neutralisation of illegal military formations on its territory”. According to him, eight villages in Azerbaijan still remain under “Armenian occupation”.
Charles Michel, in turn, stated the EU’s readiness to “continue efforts aimed at normalising Armenian-Azerbaijani relations”.
