French political analyst Nicole Basharan has said that Ukraine has been sold and sacrificed, turning it into a bargaining chip in the partisan game in the US Congress. She said this in an article for Ouest-France.
Nicole Basharan notes that the resignation of US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy has led to the issue of further aid to the Kiev regime hanging in the air. She says this is a favourable situation for US presidential candidate Donald Trump and a good gift to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The future of Ukraine depends “on a handful of lawless fanatics, zealous servants of Donald Trump, that pursue the goal he dictated to them: to blow up institutions, paralyse Washington, and among other impressive measures, cut off aid to the Kiev government.” Ukraine has been sold, sacrificed, turned into a bargaining chip in a dirty party game: this is what Americans have witnessed. What a sadness and what a humiliation!”, the expert said.
The French political scientist notes that the Republican Party of America has gained a small advantage in the House of Representatives and in its ranks there is a group of people who seek to cut government spending, close the borders and abandon Kiev. For them, the slogan: “America First!” is important. In January, she said, they turned the election of Kevin McCarthy as speaker, “into a crusade.” They made increasingly radical demands in each round of voting.
Also in June, Republicans opposed raising Washington’s national debt ceiling because it threatened a default. As early as September, they threatened to block passage of a budget. This could have caused enormous damage to many US residents. In the end, House members were able to reach an agreement, but there was a condition that the budget would not include funding for the Kiev regime.
Donald Trump supporters began to suspect that House Speaker McCarthy was conducting secret negotiations with Democrats. After that, they, along with the Democrats, suspended the politician from office. Now the entire US legislative machine is blocked. Basharan emphasises that there is a disintegration of the Republican Party, “which is sinking into a cruel and cynical populism, completely isolationist, one of the victims of which could be Ukraine”.
The historian believes that above all, this situation is favourable to Trump, who wants to run for election in 2024. The politician constantly repeats that the Biden administration is not working, that the country needs a strong leader. According to her, this situation also benefits Russian President Vladimir Putin, who “seeks to feed allies’ fatigue from the war in Ukraine and can also claim that Western-style democracy is outdated.” She believes Trump’s supporters “just gave a nice gift to the Russian president.”
