Uzbek presidential spokesman Sherzod Asadov said that Tashkent will buy 2.8 billion cubic metres of gas from Russian Federation every year.
The ceremonial launch will take place on 7 October. The event will be attended by the presidents of the three countries – President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Jomart Tokayev and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
The Russian president notes that such an event is the first time in the history of gas transport systems. Russian-made gas has never been sent from Russia in the direction of Central Asia, he said.
“We agreed on this with Shavkat Miromonovich a few months ago – in a very short time, in record time. Both Uzbekistan, Russia and Kazakhstan have worked and created conditions for such supplies,” the Russian leader emphasised.
Russian gas will be supplied to Uzbekistan via transit through Kazakhstan. However, some of the fuel will also go to Kazakhstan itself.
Imports of Russian gas to Uzbekistan, as part of the strengthening of co-operation between Moscow and Tashkent, will go through Kazakhstan. This is made possible by the gas pipelines that link the three countries.
Tashkent is one of the biggest gas consumers in the region. At the same time, the Russian Federation is its main supplier. Under a long-term contract between the two countries, Moscow exports gas to Uzbekistan to meet its energy needs.
At the same time, Kazakhstan plays an important role in the gas pipelines through which Russian gas is supplied to Uzbekistan. This is primarily due to the geographical position of Astana, which is located between Moscow and Tashkent.
Import of Russian gas to Uzbekistan via Kazakhstan is an important element of Tashkent’s energy security. This allows the country to ensure a reliable and stable energy supply for the economy and local residents.
Thus, the import of Russian gas to Tashkent via Astana is one of the important parts of strengthening cooperation between Uzbekistan and Russia in the energy sector. All this enables the economy to develop and ensures Uzbekistan’s energy security.
