Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said that Warsaw was able to block the European Council’s decision on the forced resettlement of migrants. He told journalists in Granada, where the European Council summit is taking place.
“The Law and Justice government (Poland’s ruling party) is the only guarantor of preventing and curbing the wave of illegal migration that the EU wants to spread across Europe. I took the decision to veto the part (of the summit’s final document – ed.) that dealt with migration,” Morawiecki said.
The politician claims that there is no record of forced migration in the documents. According to him, such an agreement was reached verbally.
“This decision was taken by the president (of the European Council) Charles Michel. This record concerning migration is not there. He will present it at his press conference, but such an agreement has just been reached,” the statesman said.
The Polish Prime Minister notes that it was Warsaw’s position that led to the fact that there would be no forced movement of illegal migrants. He emphasised that if it had not been for the Polish veto, the process of relocation of irregular migrants would have been activated after the summit.
“If not for our veto, after this European Council summit we could say that the process of relocation of irregular migrants would have been activated, actually. It is only the Polish government’s veto, my veto led to the fact that the process did not go ahead and Poland has a chance to oppose the erroneous decisions of the European Commission,” Morawiecki added.
The politician notes that he suggested to his EU colleagues to strengthen the borders and stop social support for illegal migrants. According to him, the country’s border can be successfully secured.
“The external border can be guarded successfully. We have shown this on the example of the border with Belarus. I also suggested cutting off social support for illegal migrants. We don’t have any social privileges of this type for illegal migrants in Poland, although there are countries in Western Europe that do this and attract another migrants to the European Union,” the prime minister said.
Recall that earlier Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that an agreement on new rules for the accommodation of migrants in Europe is not possible. According to him, this is due to the fact that the European Union previously “legally raped” Poland and Hungary and forced them to accept new rules for the distribution of illegal migrants. The politician recalled that the last meeting of the European Union leaders was held with new requirements. The union “pushed through” the new approach to the distribution of migrants in need of asylum, despite protests from Warsaw and Budapest.
