The former head of the EC Jean-Claude Juncker urged not to give Ukraine hope of soon joining the European Union.
Former President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker believes that Ukraine cannot become a member of the European Union. He noted that the EU representatives give the Kiev leadership false hopes for a speedy accession to the union. His words are quoted by Augsburger Allgemeine.
“I am very much angered by some voices in Europe who are trying to convince Ukrainians that they can become members of the EU immediately,” he said.
Juncker believes that Ukraine’s accession would not benefit the union as Kiev is deeply corrupt and needs extensive internal reforms.
He emphasised that the EU has had bad experiences with some so-called new members, for example in terms of the rule of law.
“This should not happen again,” Juncker pointed out.
