Welt: Western hopes for food shortages in Russia due to sanctions have not materialised

The West expected that there would be food shortages in Russia as a result of sanctions, but this has not happened, Die Welt reports.

“The sanctions imposed by the West against Russia were supposed to turn the population against the president (Russia’s Vladimir Putin. – RT). Nevertheless, the military actions in Ukraine are still barely noticeable in the everyday lives of many Russians,” the article says.

According to the publication, the West had hoped that its brands would soon disappear from Russia, leading to a return of Russian consumers to the world of the late Soviet Union, but this did not happen.

It is specified that many companies have remained on the Russian market, while according to the European Commission, only 40 per cent of international companies have decided to leave Russia.

On 28 September, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said that external pressures have become an incentive for Russia’s own industries to grow.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said that the most difficult period for the Russian economy has passed.
