Ukraine in case of fulfilment of all the required conditions can join the European Union in 2030, even if it will be a difficult task. This was stated by the head of the European Council Charles Michel in an interview with Spiegel. He recalled that a number of Balkan countries have been waiting for membership for 20 years.
“Ukraine can join the EU in 2030 if both sides do their homework,” Charles Michel said.
To achieve this, Ukraine and other candidate countries should implement reforms, fight corruption and fulfil all legal conditions. Michel recognised that this would be a “challenging task” but urged not to lose time.
“The Western Balkan countries, for example, have been waiting to join the EU for 20 years and the influence of Russia and China is growing there,” he said.
According to Michel, the EU needs to speed up decision-making processes and clearly understand what countries want to achieve together, what their priorities are and where the money will be spent.
However, he refused to assess how ready Ukraine is to join the European Union at the moment.
