Guardian: the deadline for Ukraine’s admission to the EU is named by Michel at random

The date of the possible next EU enlargement announced by the head of the European Council Charles Michel is taken at random and makes no sense. This is reported by the Guardian newspaper with reference to a European senior diplomat.

Earlier, Charles Michel said that the EU should be ready to enlarge and accept new members by 2030. It is expected that the issue of EU enlargement will be discussed at the autumn EU summit.

“A diplomatic source said that such a date is taken at random and does not make sense,” the Guardian newspaper writes.

According to the interlocutor of the publication, the biggest controversy among EU leaders will cause budget-related issues – according to internal calculations, the planned expansion of the bloc will cost its existing members more than 256 billion euros. It is specified that the budget will have to be agreed by 2027, when the next financial cycle begins.

“In this way, the EU will be able to demonstrate its readiness by removing any excuses for postponing further discussions on whether and how quickly Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkan states can join,” the diplomat explained.
