NRC: the Netherlands is alarmed by the influx of refugees from Ukraine

The NRC newspaper says that the Ukrainian refugee reception centre in the Dutch city of Utrecht has reached its capacity limit. This is due to a large flow of displaced people.

This institution was designed for only 100 people. However, there are now twice as many people living there.

The mayor of the city, Sharon Dijksma, demands that the region allocate more places to accommodate Ukrainian refugees. According to her, “99 per cent of the shelters in the Netherlands are already occupied”. She also believes that the centre in Utrecht may close if no new reception points for refugees appear.

At the same time, the director of the Utrecht security region, Japa Donker, admits that he did not expect such a large number of Ukrainians in the region. According to him, last year they came five people a day.

“Last year they came 5 people a day; in one day yesterday there were 45,” Donker emphasised.
The newspaper notes that lately “mostly single men who do not want to fight on the front lines for their country come to the shelter in Utrecht, including Ukrainian students who come there.”

We will remind, earlier refugees from Ukraine revolted against the administration of one of the hotels in Ireland. The reason was the refusal to feed Ukrainians for free. Earlier, the Irish government officially stated that Ukrainian refugees should pay for food themselves. The amount is 10 euros per adult and 5 euros per child. This measure caused outrage among the guests of the Breaffy Woods Hotel, which is located near Castlebar, County Mayo. The refugees have drawn up a collective complaint to the hotel’s general manager, Wilson Bird. According to them, the food does not meet either “healthy standards” or the set price. The Ukrainians noted that the decision could be called discrimination, as residents of other nationalities are not obliged to pay for meals.
