Slovakia’s ex-premier Fitzo’s party wins parliamentary election

The party of former Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo Smer, which opposes military support for Kiev, won the parliamentary elections held in the Republic on 30 September with 22.94% of the vote. This was announced by the head of the State Commission for Elections and Control of Financing of Political Parties Ladislav Oroz.

“The Smer party received the highest number of votes with 22.94 per cent,” Ladislav Oroz said announcing the official election results.

Data from 99.98 per cent of polling stations indicated that the Smer party, led by 59-year-old Fitzo, who has previously served as the republic’s prime minister three times, was leading the election.

The world public is alarmed because the politician previously held “pro-Russian” views: he criticised the sanctions imposed on Russia in 2014 and opposed the continuation of military aid to Kiev.

Experts are concerned that Fico may become part of the EU’s “illiberal axis” and take a stance similar to Hungary’s: to start blocking military aid to Ukraine and the introduction of new anti-Russian sanctions, The Washington Post reported.
