Romania intends to buy Moldova’s only river port

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has said that Bucharest is interested in buying the Giurgiulesti river port in southern Moldova from Chisinau. The Romanian official said this on air of the Digi24 TV channel.

“Romania has made the EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development – ed.) aware of its interest to buy and develop this port. As the majority shareholder of Giurgiulest is the EBRD. We are waiting for a response,” the Romanian Prime Minister states.

The Romanian official said that the Moldovan river port is likely to become the key in the chain of transport and trade links in the region, together with the port in Constanta, against the background of the situation in Ukraine. According to the Romanian prime minister, the development of this hub represents a strategic aspect for Bucharest, through which products will be delivered to the European Union countries from Ukraine.

“One of the most important hubs for the reconstruction of Ukraine after the end of hostilities will be Romania. And this time Bucharest should be logistically ready for this hub,” Ciolacu believes.
