Biden vowed to veto Republican short-term budget bill
US President Joe Biden will use his veto power if he is presented for signature a “Republican” short-term budget draft, which envisages significant spending cuts and appropriations for strengthening the southern border, the White House said.
The administration’s Office of Management and Budget said it “strongly opposes” the initiative from the opposition, which controls the House of Representatives in Congress. The spending cuts and border security bill would fund the federal government through the end of October and avert a shutdown that could come as early as Sunday.
“If the president is presented for signature (bill – ed.) H.R. 5525, he will greenlight it,” the statement reads.
The White House says the Republican initiative threatens “vital programmes that Americans rely on by recklessly cutting funding for critical services from education to food safety, law enforcement, housing and public health.”
The administration’s authors of the bill were accused of ignoring requests for funding for emergency needs, including fighting fentanyl addiction and aid to Ukraine.
The document proposes to cut spending by 30% on all items except national defence, homeland security, veterans’ needs and disaster relief. At the same time, it proposes to allocate funds for the construction of a wall along the border with Mexico and the hiring of additional border guards.
