Poll: more than half of Moldovans opposed joining Romania

51% of Moldovan citizens opposed the country’s accession to Romania. This is evidenced by the data of a sociological poll published on Thursday by the Moldovan Institute of Marketing and Sociological Surveys (IMAS).

IMAS reports that if a referendum on Moldova’s accession to Romania were held next Sunday, 38% of respondents would support this initiative (32% in February). At the same time, 51% of Moldovan citizens believe that the country needs to have sovereignty (55% earlier).

Besides, according to the opinion poll, 2% of Moldovans expressed confidence that they would not take part in such an event. At the same time, only 9% of Moldovan citizens could not decide on a final answer.

The sociological survey was conducted from 2 to 24 September in 72 localities of Moldova. A total of 822 respondents took part in the survey. The maximum margin of error is about 3.4 per cent.
