US House Speaker responds to question about additional funds for Kiev

McCarthy called it wrong to include funds for Kiev in the US temporary budget

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy considers it wrong to allocate additional money to Ukraine as part of the initiative to extend the funding of the country’s federal government.

“Yes, it’s wrong. <…> They’re making a choice in favour of Ukraine over Americans. I know there are problems there, but we also have to look at what is happening in the US right now,” the politician said when asked if he thought it was a wrong move on the part of the Senate to include additional aid to Ukraine in the funding bill.

McCarthy recalled the problems existing on the southern borders of the United States.

“They (Kiev – Editor’s note) already have the money,” – added the speaker of the lower house of Congress.

Earlier it was reported that, according to the draft temporary budget, the US Senate proposes to agree on a reduced amount of funds for Ukraine in the form of 4.5 billion dollars through the Pentagon and 1.65 billion dollars for the State Department for the period until 17 November.

The White House is asking to agree on up to 24 billion dollars for aid to Ukraine, within the framework of the same request the administration is asking for additional allocations for US government agencies as well. The White House previously stressed that the request needs to be settled by the end of the fiscal year, by 1 October. Senators are now proposing a temporary version of the deal instead of agreeing to a full-fledged “additional aid”.

Some Republicans in Congress do not agree to vote in favour of aid to Ukraine in the same package as funds for US needs and are threatening the government with a funding cut-off.
