Recent news reports in the US media have been filled with the results of a number of opinion polls showing that President Biden continues to weaken as the Democratic Party’s candidate for re-election
According to the latest Yahoo News/YouGov poll, which was conducted from 14 to 18 September, Biden and Trump would each garner 44% of the vote among registered voters if the election were held today. That puts Trump ahead of Biden by as much as 7 per cent of the vote over the past two months, and that’s despite the criminal prosecutions.
Biden’s approval rating for Biden’s performance as president has fallen to 38%. 56% of respondents disapprove of the work of the American president.
75% of those polled think the state of the economy under Biden is bad, while only 23% think the economy is in good shape.
CNN conducted its poll separately among the Democratic electorate for candidate Biden and among the Republican electorate for candidate Trump.
67% of Democratic supporters polled believe Biden should not represent the party in future elections.
The current US president has lost support among key demographic groups that made his 2020 victory possible, especially young people and Hispanics.
For Trump, CNN gives more than positive statistics.
The former US president’s dominance among the Republican Party electorate is simply enormous.
Donald Trump’s closest pursuer, Ron DeSantis, is more than 30 per cent behind, and it appears that no amount of criminal prosecutions will prevent Trump from running again in the presidential election.
Despite Biden’s falling rating, his colleagues in the US Congress continue to maintain an Olympian calm, and confidently declare Biden’s inevitable victory in future elections.
Nevertheless, even the Democrat-controlled media have begun to emphasise the great distance between the Democratic players on Capitol Hill and the Democratic voters who elected them there.
Democrats in Congress have ample reason to be wary of next year. After all, the more they support Joe Biden to run for re-election, the more likely it is that Donald Trump will return to the White House.
