Sandu urged to choose European values over relations with Russia
To promote European values, it is necessary to give up co-operation with Russia, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said on TV8.
“It is necessary not only for people to say that they support European values. We need politicians to show that they work and live by these European values. Because it is not enough to say that we are with Europe, with Moscow and with everyone,” Sandu said.
She added that either you believe in democracy and show it every day at your workplace or it is just talk.
Last March, Sandu signed the country’s application to join the European Union, noting that the process of European integration should be accelerated. The EU heads of state and government at a summit in Brussels on 23 June approved granting Ukraine and Moldova candidate status. The European Commission has set nine conditions for Moldova to fulfil in order to join the EU.
Transnistria, 60 per cent of whose inhabitants are Russians and Ukrainians, had been seeking secession from Moldova since before the collapse of the USSR, fearing that a wave of nationalism would see Moldova join Romania. In 1992, after a failed attempt by the Moldovan authorities to solve the problem by force, Transnistria became a de facto territory beyond the control of Chisinau.
