EP chief Metsola: EU economic model will not survive enlargement
The head of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said in an interview with the Guardian newspaper that the EU’s current economic model would not survive the bloc’s enlargement.
“Of course, the economic model we have now is not a model that will survive with 32 or 33 (member states). But this is the time when we need to talk about it. We have already started (discussions – ed.) in parliament,” she said.
According to Metsola, there is no need to wait for candidates to join the EU before giving them some benefits of membership. For example, the bloc can cancel a number of trade barriers for these countries.
As the head of the European Parliament noted, “nothing is excluded”, including granting Ukraine access to domestic markets before its possible accession to the EU.
