Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto said that Caracas is seeking to become a member of BRICS and is seeing support for its candidacy from all countries, including Russia. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
“Venezuela is keen to become an official member of BRICS in the near future. We are strongly supported by Brazil, the Russian Federation, China and South Africa itself. All countries support our candidacy,” Pinto said on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The diplomat also said that Venezuela is “very happy about the expansion that BRICS has at this stage or will have from January, when Russian Federation becomes chair”. According to him, Caracas is already interacting with all commissions of the association.
“Venezuela is already working in all BRICS commissions and exchanging information with all countries,” the minister specified.
Recall that earlier Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said at a press conference on the results of the summit of the organisation in South Africa that BRICS has more than 15 more applications from potential participants under consideration. He stressed that the presence of more than 15 applications to join BRICS, which remain on the table after the expansion of the association, testifies to the geopolitical novelty of this format of cooperation.
