“Time for revenge”: the West has sounded the alarm over the move by Russia and its allies

El Pais: BRICS seeks to improve its position on the world stage

The BRICS countries are seeking to revise the world order and take a stronger position on the global stage, columnist Andrea Rizzi wrote in his article for El País.

“Their capabilities and approaches are different, but the common denominator is a desire to overcome an unsatisfactory, sometimes humiliating past that demands change and compensation,” the author said.

Most of the grievances these countries have, as Rizzi pointed out, are directed against the West, and this affects developments in the world. He added that Russia, China and India are also followed by the Global South, some countries of which will join BRICS.

Rizzi felt that the West should accept the claims of the South and East to create fairer and more balanced international institutions, especially economic ones.

The BRICS summit was held in Johannesburg on 22-24 August under the chairmanship of South Africa. It was attended by the leaders of China, India, Brazil and South Africa, Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. President Vladimir Putin participated in the summit via videoconference.

During the event, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the official invitation of Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, UAE and Saudi Arabia to join BRICS. He said that full membership of the new countries that join the organisation will start on January 1, 2024.
