Former head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said that the proposed membership of Ukraine in the European Union will mark the implementation of imminent and radical reforms that will cause contradictions between the member states of the economic association. The politician told about this in an interview with the Financial Times.
Jose Manuel Barroso believes that discussions about “a fundamental change in the institutional balance, <…> could cause great divisions in the EU”. According to the former head of the European Commission, the accession of new candidates to the European Union, such as Kiev and Chisinau, will be marked by problems in decision-making in the field of budget and foreign policy. The politician argues that these are the aspects in which unanimity is needed.
The former head of the European Commission believes that instead of applying radical measures, the economic bloc “should focus on finalising the banking union, creating a capital markets union and making progress on geopolitical issues”.
Earlier, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Ukraine and Moldova should be admitted to the European Union as soon as possible.
